Kyle Busch is the best driver in NASCAR.
I have heard this said more times than I can count. Mostly on Speed TV. This has got to be the most ridiculous statement ever made in sports. Yes, even dumber than Barry Bonds claiming he never used steroids.
Kyle Busch is the best driver in NASCAR? Lets think about this a minute. We have a sport where men and a few (really cute) women race cars very fast. For the most part they do this around different length ovals. They also do this mainly in cars except for the truck series. They do this weekly and have for more than 50 years, under the NASCAR umbrella.
The greatest driver in history was Dale Earnhardt, in my opinion. If you say it was Richard Petty or David Pearson you have a pretty good argument. If you say it was Darrell Waltrip or Cale Yarborough I would disagree but I could see your point. There are a couple of others you could get me to listen to facts without laughing but only a couple of others.
So the question is; currently is Kyle Busch the best driver in NASCAR? Don’t make me laugh. Lets get two things straight. The NASCAR truck series is made up of mostly young drivers and drivers not good enough to race Nationwide. Nationwide is made up of mostly young drivers and drivers not good enough to race Sprint Cup. Kenny Wallace for example – nine Nationwide wins and zero Cup wins. Good driver just not good enough to win at the Cup level.
So lets narrow the best driver argument to the Sprint Cup series. We could, of course, disqualify Kyle Busch immediately by just considering men who have won a Cup. In fact that’s exactly what I would do.
NASCAR is the only sport in the world where the fans get drunk enough to claim a driver who has never won a championship is the best in his (her) sport. Can you imagine claiming a guy who had never finished a single year ranked number one in tennis or golf as the best in their sport?
Of course not!
Matt Kenseth has a championship. Kyle’s brother Kurt has a championship. When was the last time you heard SpeedTV say they are the best? Tony Stewart has a couple of Cups. He could be in the argument. Jeff Gordon has four championships. He might even be one of the couple of guys who gets in to the best ever debate but is he currently the best driver in NASCAR?
No!
It may surprise you, but if my hand was on a Bible, I would have to say Jimmie Johnson is the best driver currently racing. It’s the only logical choice. The man has won the last five championships. How can anyone else be called the best driver in NASCAR?
If you say Kyle Busch is better than the only man who has ever won five straight championships it means one of two things. You are either too drunk to form a clear thought or too stupid.
Assuming, Speed TV doesn’t allow their on the air talking heads to drink on the job – guess where that leaves them?
Until someone not named Jimmie Johnson proves they can win a championship there is no argument who is currently the best driver in NASCAR.
In fact if someone doesn’t prove it soon there may be no argument who is the greatest driver in NASCAR history.
And it sure the hell isn’t Kyle Busch.
